One of our yearly family traditions is going on a ‘£9.50 Sun holiday’, if possible we stay at a Haven Holiday Park and try to upgrade to the best caravan available. We always pick the long weekend stay of 3 nights (Friday – Monday) as 4 weekday nights (Monday – Friday) seems a waste of annual leave to me as there is only so much holiday camp entertainment I can cope with.
With the Sun £9.50 offer for a party of four adults we pay the extra supplement for entertainment passes and bed linen and usually upgrade. This works out to be around £35 – £40 per person, how many clean 3 star hotels in the UK can you pay around £50 per night for a spacious self-catering apartment for 4 people and free parking?
In the Haven Parks we have stayed in the food in the restaurants are very good (I recommend the chicken and bacon melt and the 5 item English breakfast) and the prices are not expensive. This is good because what I save on meals I spend on drinks in the bar which aren’t so cheap, probably the average price of drinking in a city centre bar. Our family game on holiday is who ends up paying for cheapest and who pays for the most expensive round, with me being a Scrooge I try and pay for the coffee round.
I’m not a fan of holiday camp entertainment and I don’t have any kids so I can’t ready comment on the entertainment as it’s not my cuppa tea and as for the kids activities, ask a 6 year old instead. With the caravan/mobile homes we haven’t had a bad one…yet, always clean and after we have worked out how to switch things on in the kitchen and the heating, I could actually live in one of these homes and the way my shirking house deposit is going I might have to.
Haven Holiday Parks visited – https://www.haven.com/
Reighton Sands, Yorkshire
Sea view, Dorset
Klin Park, Tenby
Doniford Bay, Watchlet
Church Farm, Pagham
Cala Gran, Fleetwood
Isle of Wright – No Haven Parks on the Isle but the Rookley Country Park was just as good.
Newquay – I won’t name and shame but this Holiday Park. It was not the best, clean but basic and I don’t think it had a restaurant, but this is what happens when you book you £9.50 break at the late minute and all the Haven Parks are full.
Now that we are running out of new places to visit I have suggested we base our next £9.50 weekends on television and film locations. Note to self – Google ‘TV shows filmed in Blackpool’.
